Most software sold as “scheduling software” does not schedule anything. It takes bookings against slots a human already worked out. Common questions
What does “constraint resolution” actually mean in scheduling software?
It means the software searches for a schedule that satisfies your rules, rather than checking a schedule you built. Hard constraints must hold — an instructor cannot teach two sessions at once, a room cannot hold two classes at once, an attendee cannot be in two places at once. Soft preferences, such as spreading a course across distinct days, are weighted and traded off. A true solver either returns a schedule in which every hard constraint holds, or tells you no such schedule exists.
How is that different from a tool that shows conflict warnings?
A warning tells you the placement you just made was wrong. A solver never makes that placement. The difference compounds: with clash warnings, every change you make can invalidate earlier work, so a mid-term room change means re-checking the whole grid by hand. With a solver you change the constraint and re-solve.
What happens when no valid schedule exists?
